Many Fern Hill families were happy to see that the sand from both playgrounds was removed over the summer holiday. The sand was replaced with mulch – not just any type of mulch, but engineered wood chips, otherwise known as playground mulch. This type of mulch is commonly used in city playgrounds, as it is clean, safe, and provides much needed cushioning underneath play structures. Perhaps most importantly, some parents may say, children will no longer come home with a bucket full of sand in their shoes!
This project was taken on by our favourite landscaper, Frenk, from Van Herpen Landscaping. Frenk managed to secure a truck big enough to haul the playground mulch and was actually able to find a spot large enough to park the truck to unload the mulch. Knowing that children enjoy digging in sand, a new sandbox was created in each playground.
In addition to the new sandbox, the preschool children now have numerous areas where they can play: the playhouse, the swing set, the climbing structure, the water table, the bike and basketball area, the much loved car structure if they feel like taking a drive.
The Grade School children will also enjoy a new sandbox and newly painted King Ball squares. If children feel like facing off for a game of ball hockey or soccer, there is a freshly painted face off circle. You may also notice a new bench in the Grade School playground. This is a Buddy Bench that was kindly donated by a Fern Hill family. When a child feels like s/he needs a buddy to play with at recess, they can sit on the bench to let other children know they are in need of a friend.
All the work completed over the summer may not be noticeable if you enter the playground from the staff parking lot because Frenk and his crew also built a beautiful new fence that separates the Grade School yard from the parking lot. Outdoor play has never been so much fun at Fern Hill!
