School History
September 2006 marks the 25th Anniversary of Fern Hill School.  Throughout these years it has become a vibrant community of young students and teachers engaged in the quest of learning and discovery.

Fern Hill School is a vibrant community, engaged in the quest of learning for more than 20 years. Founded in 1981 by Maureen Brookson, with a registration of eight children, and guided by a desire to provide young children with an exceptional education, the school grew and flourished into a thriving preschool for children up to six years old. In 1988 Fern Hill was incorporated as a non-profit school with charitable status. In 1993, with the backing of a group of dedicated parents, Fern Hill began the development of the elementary school.

Children now enter the school as early as age 2 and are provided with the opportunities, challenges and compassion which allow each to flourish, leaving Fern Hill as confident, dynamic graduates of the Grade 6 Program. With beginnings in the Nursery School level, Fern Hill School has long been recognized for its excellence in the Preschool School and Kindergarten levels. Inclusion of technology, Extended French and dynamic Physical Education opportunities, combined with authentic Math and Language experiences and inquiry based Science and Social Studies programs has resulted in an equally impressive Elementary School. The elementary classrooms reflect the same warm, caring environment that characterizes Fern Hill School as a whole.

Fern Hill School is a rich community of families local to the New Edinburgh area, the greater Ottawa area and international locations. Easy access from the Rockcliffe and Vanier Parkways, make for an easy commute from the Center, East and South of the city. With a commitment to affordability, Fern Hill is within the economic means of a wide range of families. The small size of this private school invites a warm, friendly environment for parents as well as students. Working parents are supported by the extended care hours, before and after school. A proven balance of warm, loving environment and academic challenges is Fern Hill’s recipe for success.

In 2000, with the desire to secure a permanent address for itself and after many years of fund raising spear-headed by a group of dedicated parents, Fern Hill School was able to purchase the building they now reside in at 50 Vaughn Street.  This has enabled the school to dedicate itself to providing a warm, caring and nurturing environment for its students.
