A simple classroom conversation about food insecurity has grown into a school-wide act of kindness at Fern Hill School. The initiative began in Cindy Bennell’s Grade 2 class when students discussed ways to help people in their community. Inspired to take action, the class began preparing brown bag lunches for those in need.
Each lunch includes a sandwich, fruit, snacks, and a handmade note from students to brighten someone’s day. What started as a small class project has now grown into a school-wide effort. With the support of parent volunteers and students from across the grades, more than 70 lunches are assembled and delivered regularly to Highjinx, a local community hub in Centretown that supports people experiencing food insecurity.
Fern Hill students are proud to show that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in their community.
